ATCN

Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses

The ATCN Course is an extremely important tool in guiding the management of trauma patients in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, and in the management of mass casualty incidents. It is now undisputed that the ATLS-ATCN Course is a programme that contributes to the reduction of trauma-related mortality and morbidity. In its educational content, it provides a common communication background, on the basis of which lives can be saved in critical situations.

ATLS-ATCN, as you will see, does not promote new concepts in the field of trauma management. Established therapeutic methods are taught within it. Its distinguishing feature is the systematic, concise approach to the initial management of the trauma patient. Emphasis is thus placed on its treatment, particularly in the first hour after injury, and refers to its resuscitation and stabilisation, its very important continuous reassessment, and finally to the process of its transfer, if required, to a more specialised facility, e.g. a trauma centre. Of course, the therapeutic principles presented in the ATLS-ATCN manual do not only concern the management of trauma victims. They can thus also be beneficial for patients with diseases unrelated to trauma.

It is known that injured patients present a wide range of complex problems. The ATLS-ATCN Student Course presents a clear way to approach the assessment and management of the polytraumatised patient. The seminar provides nurses with knowledge and techniques that are understandable and easily adaptable to their needs. The skills presented in this manual constitute not the only, but undoubtedly a safe way to perform each technique.
